What is a Managed Fund?

Managed funds are registered investment management schemes that allow you to pool your money with other investors into a single fund that is able to invest in assets that might otherwise be out of your reach as a stand-alone investor. Managed funds, also called unit trusts, are funds managed for you by others – namely, experienced professionals such as fund managers. Managed funds can invest in a variety of assets including shares, property, fixed interest or a combination of these. A managed fund will be offered by a product disclosure document, which allows you to see where it is you are investing and the investment objectives of the fund.

Why Invest in a Managed Fund?

The main reason for investing in managed funds is the diversification that they offer. As part of a group of investors, you can get exposure to certain investments that you may never have been able to afford as a single investor. While the amount you invest may be small, the investment will be diversified so if one stock performs badly you won’t lose your entire stake.

You also receive the benefit of a professional fund manager. Fund managers are experienced in investing and also have access to better research then the average investor.
